The resolution, presented by the Minister of Science and Technology, marks a significant move toward building a structured national framework for space-related development at a time when governments worldwide are increasingly investing in orbital technologies.
According to officials, space technology is now seen as a strategic enabler across multiple sectors in Sri Lanka, including disaster management, telecommunications, national security, environmental monitoring, and economic innovation.
The proposed policy aims to bring coherence to currently fragmented initiatives, ensuring that future space activities are guided by a unified national strategy. It will also strengthen Sri Lanka’s capacity to engage in international cooperation and participate more effectively in global space governance systems.
Authorities further noted that the framework will ensure compliance with international obligations, treaties, and standards governing space exploration and usage.
Once established, the expert committee is expected to outline the country’s long-term roadmap for space technology development, potentially positioning Sri Lanka to expand its role in emerging regional and global space collaborations.
