The President made these remarks while addressing the 17th National War Heroes’ Commemoration Ceremony held in Battaramulla today (19).

He said the armed forces played a major role in protecting and bringing relief to millions of people, adding that their sacrifices should be honoured not only through remembrance ceremonies but also by creating a progressive country for future generations.

President Dissanayake noted that many families still continue to grieve the loss of fathers, Spouses, children, and loved ones due to the war, stressing the importance of ensuring that such tragedy never happens again.

He emphasized the need to preserve lasting peace in the country and highlighted the valuable contribution made by the armed forces during natural disasters and national emergencies, describing their service as exceptional.
The President further stated that the government is working to strengthen Sri Lanka’s international reputation while protecting the rule of law and judicial independence, noting that such efforts reflect the hopes of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
He also stressed that Sri Lanka belongs to all communities and rejected divisions based on ethnicity, stating that the war was fought against separatism and not against any ethnic group.
President Dissanayake added that the government’s priority is to prevent the return of conflict and to build a democratic society where all citizens are treated equally under the law and provided equal opportunities regardless of their background.
Concluding his speech, the President paid tribute to the members of the armed forces and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to national unity, peace, and development.
