Addressing a media briefing at the Department of Government Information yesterday, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Hiniduma Sunil Senevi said the programme would focus on maintaining the religious significance of Vesak while ensuring public and road safety.
The Minister said guidelines had been issued covering the organisation of Dansals, Vesak decorations and crowd management, while coordination with security forces would also be strengthened during the festive period.
Authorities said measures would be taken to prevent displays and activities deemed unsuitable for the religious festival as part of efforts to preserve the spiritual atmosphere of Vesak.
The programme will be jointly implemented by the All Ceylon Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya and state institutions.
Meanwhile, the State Vesak Festival, themed “Let’s rally together for the common good,” is scheduled to begin on May 27 at Midellawala Purana Viharaya with the participation of Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Celebrations and related programmes will continue across the Matara District until June 2, alongside religious and community development initiatives, including temple and monastery development projects. A delegation from Vietnam is also expected to participate in this year’s Vesak celebrations.
