According to the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), the decision was reached after the Prime Minister assured student representatives that the land and house in Malwana, currently under the authority of the Dompe Divisional Secretariat, would be transferred to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The discussions were held at the Prime Minister’s Office earlier today, with representatives of the IUSF participating in the meeting.
Speaking to the media after the talks, IUSF Convener Sasindu Perera stated that the government had responded positively to the students’ request and agreed to take steps to hand over the property to the UGC as soon as possible.
“The Prime Minister has assured us that the Malwana property will be transferred to the University Grants Commission as soon as possible. The government has responded positively to our request. In view of that response, we have decided to leave the Malwana premises at this moment,” he said.
The students had been occupying the property since May 01 amid demands that it be allocated for university-related purposes. Following the agreement reached during today’s discussions, the group has decided to vacate the premises immediately.
