Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the country, with widespread showers and thundershowers forecast in several provinces.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Northern provinces, as well as in the districts of Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara.
The Department warned that very heavy rainfall of around 150mm is likely in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. Meanwhile, heavy showers exceeding 100mm are expected in parts of Galle and Matara districts.
A few showers or thundershowers may also develop in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1.00 p.m.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers to minimize possible damages.
Rough Seas Expected Around the Island
The prevailing low-pressure system is also expected to intensify windy and rainy conditions in sea areas surrounding Sri Lanka over the coming days.
The Department of Meteorology advised naval and fishing communities to remain vigilant and pay close attention to future forecasts and bulletins.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in sea areas around the island, with south-westerly winds prevailing at speeds of 25–35 kmph.
Wind speeds could increase up to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding sea regions may remain moderate.
The Department further warned that swell waves of about 2.0 to 2.5 meters may develop in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
Fishermen and marine operators have also been cautioned about temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
