The case was brought forward by the Colombo Crimes Division after authorities uncovered a large cache of military-grade ammunition and explosives during a police raid.
The investigation commenced on the 2nd of last month when officers from the CCD, acting under a court-issued search warrant, searched the former parliamentarian’s residence. During the operation, police recovered two T-56 magazines, 221 rounds of live T-56 ammunition, 31 rounds of 84S type ammunition, 103 rounds of .22 caliber revolver ammunition, and one live hand grenade.
Following the discovery, Kathriarachchi was taken into custody under a 30-day detention order to facilitate further investigations. During this period, investigators reportedly questioned him extensively regarding the origin, ownership, and intended use of the weapons and ammunition recovered from the property.
After the detention order expired, the suspect was produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate today. Upon reviewing the submissions made by the CCD, the court ordered that Chandana Kathriarachchi be further remanded until May 27 while investigations continue.
