Addressing a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (14), Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, Brigadier (Retired) S.B. Kohona, said the annual event is organised to honour war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and independence.
He noted that while the ceremony will follow traditional observances, several new arrangements have been introduced this year to broaden participation. These include increased opportunities for war heroes and the families of fallen servicemen to take part in the commemoration.
Families of Tamil and Muslim war heroes from the Northern and Eastern provinces have also been invited to attend, reflecting a more inclusive approach to the event.
Director of the Ranaviru Seva Authority L.M.C.B. Nishshanka stated that around 2,769 participants are expected, including members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Special Task Force, Civil Security Department, National Cadet Corps, Ranaviru Seva Authority, and families of fallen war heroes.
He further added that 160 parents of fallen war heroes will be given the opportunity, along with special invitees, to visit the memorial and offer floral tributes during the ceremony.
