The warning, issued at 9.30 am today (14), covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. It will remain in effect until 8.30 am tomorrow.
The Meteorology Department said that a low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka continues to persist and is expected to gradually weaken while moving away from the island over the next 36 hours.
Due to the prevailing weather conditions, heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at several places within the warned areas.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against possible hazards such as strong winds and lightning associated with the heavy rain.
Meanwhile, the highest rainfall recorded during the past 24 hours was 256.2 mm in the Puttalam area.
