Chairman of the Sri Lanka Institute of Respiratory Physicians, Dr. Sumana Handagala, stated that asthma can be effectively controlled and even cured with proper medical treatment.
He made these remarks during a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau to mark World Asthma Day, which fell on May 5.
Dr. Handagala noted that asthma is a widespread non-communicable disease affecting millions globally.
“Asthma is a common disease all over the world. About 260 million people suffer from it globally. It particularly affects young children and young people. It has been found that around 1,000 people die from this disease every day worldwide,” he said.
Health officials emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, proper treatment, and continued medical care to reduce complications and prevent asthma-related deaths.
