Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division L.S. Sooriyabandara stated that rivers including the Nilwala Ganga, Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga and Attanagalu Oya are showing a steady receding trend after recent heavy rains.
However, he noted that water levels remain elevated at Millakanda on the Kalu Ganga, where conditions are still being closely monitored.
While the easing rainfall has brought temporary relief in river catchments, authorities cautioned that the situation could change, as the Department of Meteorology has forecast further rainfall in the coming days.
Sooriyabandara also confirmed that 18 of the country’s 73 major reservoirs are currently spilling, while another 18 medium-scale reservoirs are actively discharging water, indicating that water management concerns remain despite the short-term decline in river levels.
