The 69-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday night (May 13) in the Sri Bodhi Road area of Gampaha. Police said the arrest was made based on crucial information uncovered during the interrogation of other suspects currently being detained in connection with the case.
The arrest is linked to the fatal shooting that took place inside Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 05 on February 19, 2025. Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who was in prison custody at the time, had been produced before court when a gunman disguised as a lawyer opened fire during the proceedings, killing him on the spot.
Investigators believe the assassination was part of a coordinated operation involving organized criminals based overseas. According to police, Osma Gunasekera allegedly acted as a key facilitator by supplying firearms and providing logistical support for the attack.
During the arrest, police recovered a foreign-manufactured repeater firearm, two magazines, and ten rounds of live ammunition from the suspect’s possession.
