The fines were imposed today (13) following raids carried out by the Matara District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority based on complaints received from consumers.
According to the authority, each hotel was fined Rs. 500,000 for violating consumer protection regulations by charging excessive prices for bottled water.
Investigations revealed that a one-litre bottle of water with a maximum retail price of Rs. 100 had been sold for Rs. 450, while a 500ml bottle priced at Rs. 70 had been sold for Rs. 300.
The Consumer Affairs Authority urged consumers to check the maximum retail price and expiry date before purchasing products and advised the public not to pay more than the stated price. Consumers were also encouraged to request bills for purchased goods.
The authority further requested the public to report similar price violations to the 1977 hotline during office hours, along with supporting evidence such as bills.
