Academic activities for several grades at Telijjawila Royal College in the Matara District have been suspended today (13), following concerns over possible landslides and slope failures triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in the area.
According to the school administration, the decision was taken as a precautionary safety measure, with classes suspended for students in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9, and the Advanced Level classes. The Principal stated that the move was intended to ensure student safety amid worsening weather conditions affecting the district.
However, it has been confirmed that normal academic activities will continue for Grade 10 and Grade 11 students, as well as for the primary section of the school.
Meanwhile, persistent rainfall has been reported in Akuressa and adjoining areas of the Matara District, including key catchment zones of the Nilwala River such as Deniyaya and parts of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve.
Authorities and local residents have observed a noticeable rise in the water level of the Nilwala River, particularly in the Pitabeddara and Akuressa areas, following hours of continuous rainfall, raising further concerns over potential flooding and slope instability in vulnerable locations.
