The testing programme was carried out by the National Institute of Transport Medicine in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and the Sri Lanka Police.
According to officials, 148 bus drivers and assistants stationed at the Kadawatha Bus Stand were subjected to random drug tests conducted inside a mobile laboratory bus operated by the institute.
The initiative forms part of a broader road safety programme introduced under the direction of Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake.
Dr. Lionel Muhandiramge, Medical Officer of the National Institute of Transport Medicine, said the programme was introduced in response to recent road accidents and increasing concerns over indiscipline among drivers.
He stated that authorities intend to continue the programme islandwide in order to protect passengers, pedestrians and drivers.
Officials also warned that strict legal action would be taken against drivers identified as having used dangerous drugs, including penalties under both corporate and common law provisions.
