The programme is being implemented under the Road Safety Plan prepared by the ministry, based on a concept introduced by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake.
As part of the initiative, random drug tests were conducted this morning (12) at the Kadawatha Bus Stand by a team led by Dr. Lionel Muhandiramge, Medical Officer of the National Institute of Transport Medicine.
The tests were carried out using the institute’s mobile laboratory bus, with 148 bus drivers and assistants undergoing screening.
Authorities confirmed that seven individuals tested positive for dangerous drug use.
Dr. Muhandiramge stated that the programme aims to create a disciplined group of drivers free from the use of dangerous drugs, particularly in light of recent traffic accidents and concerns over deteriorating road discipline.
He further noted that the programme is being implemented with the full support of the Ministry of Transport, the Sri Lanka Police and the National Institute of Transport Medicine, and will be expanded islandwide through the deployment of mobile testing units.
Authorities also warned that drivers found to have used dangerous drugs would face maximum punishment under the relevant legal provisions, including action under the country’s common law system.
