The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the inauguration ceremony of the Mahapola Scholarship Alumni Web Portal and the awarding of Mahapola Scholarships for the 2023/2024 academic year at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on Monday (12).
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said higher education should create students who are professionally trained and capable of viewing the world from a broader perspective.
She said that the government is working to strengthen opportunities for students to access higher education while also improving the quality and reach of educational programmes.
The Prime Minister further stated that after the present government assumed office, steps were taken to make the work of the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund more efficient and ensure timely assistance to students.
She also highlighted that the Mahapola scholarship allowance had been increased to Rs. 10,000, describing it as a significant achievement for students.
The event was attended by Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe, Deputy Minister R. M. Jayawardena, several MPs, university professors and government officials.
