Issuing a farewell message following his retirement on May 5 after 37 years of service, Arukgoda described the reforms as “difficult but necessary battles” that helped shape the legacy of the institution.
He stated that throughout his career he remained committed to upholding the law and serving with professionalism and integrity, despite numerous internal and external challenges.
Arukgoda said Sri Lanka Customs had managed to overcome adversity and continue its duties with “strength and dignity,” adding that the achievements made during his tenure reflected the dedication and unity of officers within the department.
The former Customs chief also expressed confidence in the next generation of leaders, noting that courage, commitment, and resilience would be essential to carry the institution forward.
He further thanked Customs officials, members of the trading community, and others who supported him during challenging periods in his career.
Arukgoda also extended his gratitude to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading Sri Lanka Customs.
He retired from service on May 5 after completing 37 years at the department.
