The suspect, identified as the nephew of Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe, was taken into custody after being summoned to record a statement. He is accused of illegally assembling parts of a cab bearing number 28-8583 and submitting forged documents to alter its chassis number.
The case is linked to the earlier arrest of Amarasinghe, who serves as the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic. He was arrested on March 27 at his official residence in Colombo and was remanded until the 10th after being produced before the Pilessa Magistrate's Court.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had obtained fraudulent weight certificates and used them to apply for a category “E” registration number from the Department of Motor Traffic. He is also accused of illegally assembling and registering parts of another lorry, bearing number 27-8454, and assisting in the process.
The investigation was initially launched by the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force and later handed over to the CID on the instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
The arrested suspect is a 38-year-old businessman from Mawathagama. Further investigations are being carried out by the Financial Investigation Division of the CID.
