This year’s National Vesak Festival will be held under the theme “Hasten to do Good,” encouraging citizens to actively engage in acts of generosity, compassion, and spiritual reflection. The main state celebrations are scheduled to take place in Matara, centered around the historic Midellawala Purana Viharaya, which is expected to attract large numbers of devotees from across the country.
In line with the Vesak Week declaration, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government. The proposal outlines a series of Buddhist religious programs to be conducted islandwide throughout the Vesak period.
These programs will include almsgiving (dansal), sil campaigns, meditation sessions, and the illumination of homes and public spaces with Vesak lanterns and decorations. Authorities are also expected to coordinate with local government bodies to ensure the smooth organization of events and maintain public safety.
Vesak remains a time of unity and spiritual renewal for Sri Lankans, with communities coming together to reflect on Buddhist teachings and extend kindness to others.
