This emphasis was highlighted during a recent meeting held on March 30 between Andrey Denisov, First Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, and Bimal Ratnayake, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. Yevgeny Ditrik, a member of the Economic Policy Committee of the Federation Council, was also present.
During the discussions, Denisov noted that relations between the two countries have developed steadily over several decades and that 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He highlighted the existence of an active political dialogue and stressed that parliamentary cooperation remains a key pillar in further strengthening bilateral relations.
He also pointed out that a friendship association has already been established within the Sri Lankan Parliament to foster closer ties with Russia, adding that such mechanisms should be further developed. Both sides expressed interest in expanding collaboration not only bilaterally but also through international platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Minister Ratnayake reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary engagement with Russia and expressed appreciation for the humanitarian and international assistance extended by Russia over the years.
