A portion of the metal requirements of domestic industries is met through locally sourced scrap metal, while the remainder is fulfilled באמצעות imported metal ingots. To support small-scale industrialists, the Cabinet had earlier decided at its meeting on November 9, 2020, to suspend the export of several categories of scrap metal, including iron, copper, aluminum, brass, and related materials, as well as aluminum and zinc ingots and copper wire.
However, authorities have observed that certain parties continue to export scrap metal and counterfeit metal-related products by misclassifying them under different Harmonized System (HS) codes. This practice has contributed to a growing shortage of locally available raw materials, adversely affecting domestic manufacturers.
In response to the situation, the Cabinet of Ministers has now approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development to introduce the necessary legal provisions to prevent such exports.
The move is expected to ensure the availability of essential raw materials for local industries and strengthen the sustainability of small and medium-scale manufacturing enterprises.
