Geologist Indrajith Gamage, who is in charge of the Southern Province, said this is the first time a water source with a continuous flow of 10,000 litres (10 cubic metres) per minute has been identified in Sri Lanka.
He noted that the previous largest groundwater source was discovered in the Madhu area, where the flow was recorded at 7,000 litres per minute.
According to officials, the tube well was drilled after conducting geological studies of rock layers and identifying locations where groundwater accumulates through fractures in underground strata using technical equipment.
The Water Board stated that steps will be taken in the future to distribute water from this source to residents facing water shortages in Pitabeddara, Morawaka and nearby suburban areas.
