Pediatrician Dr. Channa de Silva emphasized that while children should not be discouraged from engaging in sports, special care must be taken to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

He noted that children suffering from chronic illnesses require extra attention when participating in sports activities. Dr. de Silva also warned that respiratory diseases are currently spreading and advised parents and teachers to remain vigilant.

With the ongoing hot weather conditions, he urged parents to ensure that children carry sufficient water to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Meanwhile, sports and physical education specialist Dr. Ruwan Jayasuriya of the National Hospital in Colombo stressed that injuries to children during sports events remain a serious concern despite existing safety instructions.

He said schools and organizers must strictly follow circulars and guidelines issued by the Ministries of Education, Sports, and Health when conducting sports activities.

Dr. Jayasuriya further highlighted the importance of proper preparations when organizing school sports meets, including providing shaded areas with fans and keeping ice available to manage heat-related emergencies.

He warned that it is a serious lapse if principals, sports instructors, or other responsible officials fail to follow the recommended safety guidelines.

Medical professionals stressed that systematic planning and strict adherence to safety measures are essential to minimize accidents and protect children participating in sports activities.
