According to police, the incident took place at around 11.30 a.m. when a vehicle belonging to a member of the school’s board of directors, which had been parked inside the school grounds, suddenly moved forward reportedly due to a brake malfunction.
At the time of the incident, three students were reportedly drinking water within the school compound when the vehicle ran over them. One student died on the spot due to severe injuries, while the other two injured students were immediately rushed to the Kandy National Hospital for treatment.
The owner-director of the vehicle has informed police that he had properly parked the car and exited it, and that the accident occurred when the vehicle suddenly went out of control due to a technical fault.
Police have launched an extensive investigation to determine whether the accident was caused by a mechanical failure or possible negligence.
The tragic incident, which occurred during school hours within what is considered a secure school environment, has caused deep shock and concern among parents and residents in the area.
