Speaking at an awareness program on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Collectback strategic model held yesterday (11) in Colombo, the Minister noted that around 938 metric tons of plastic waste are generated daily.

He said that currently only 32 percent of plastic waste is collected from the environment, while just 4 percent is recycled, describing the situation as highly concerning.

The Minister further pointed out that due to this imbalance, international indices now rank Sri Lanka among the top countries contributing to ocean plastic pollution.

The program brought together heads of Local Government Authorities and officials to discuss strategies to strengthen waste management through greater coordination between manufacturers and local authorities.
