Speaking at a special media briefing, Jayatissa stated that the government has called on all parties involved to cease hostilities and work toward global peace. “The Middle East is an important region in the world and is directly tied to our economy. It must not be undermined,” he added, highlighting the broader economic and geopolitical implications of the conflict.
He noted that around 1 million Sri Lankan expatriate workers are currently employed in Middle Eastern countries. Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions in the region are closely monitoring developments and providing necessary assistance to citizens.
Jayatissa cautioned that immediate evacuation of Sri Lankans from the region is not possible at present, as most airports remain closed due to the conflict.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to extend visas by two weeks, free of charge, for travelers currently in Sri Lanka. The extension is valid for 14 days, with a review planned depending on further developments.
Jayatissa also said that authorities are exploring alternative air routes to facilitate travelers seeking to return to their home countries safely.
