According to the NMRA, these products — whether used alone or in combination with other substances — cannot be registered under any regulatory category, including medicines, cosmetics, or borderline products.
The decision also strictly prohibits the importation, storage, distribution, sale, personal use, advertising, or promotion of such products for skin lightening purposes.
The NMRA stated that the ban is based on a lack of scientific evidence supporting Glutathione IV and Vitamin C IV as effective skin lightening agents. There are also concerns about potential health risks associated with intravenous use, including immediate, short-term, and long-term complications.
Dr. K.M.G.K. Bandara, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NMRA, emphasized that these preparations are neither recognized nor proven for skin lightening purposes, highlighting the authority’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
