Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) Director L.S. Sooriyabandara stated that widespread rainfall was recorded during the 21-hour period ending at 6.00 a.m. today, contributing to increased inflows to major river basins.
Peradeniya in the Mahaweli Basin recorded the highest rainfall in the country with 213.2 mm. Deraniyagala in the Kelani Basin received 163.2 mm, while Kithulgala recorded 112.9 mm during the same period.
In addition, 98.8 mm of rainfall was reported in Urawa in the Urubokka Ganga area, and Nawalapitiya in the Mahaweli Basin recorded 95.9 mm.
Sooriyabandara noted that the heavy rainfall has caused water levels in several rivers to rise, though most remain within normal limits. He assured that river conditions are being closely monitored and urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
