The accident occurred at around 2.00 a.m. near Watawala Sinhala College along the Hatton–Colombo main road.
According to Watawala Police OIC Chief Inspector Chandana Gamage, the driver and his assistant, who were in the lorry at the time of the दुर्घادث, were admitted to the Watawala Regional Hospital with serious injuries. Due to the severity of their condition, they were later transferred to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital for further treatment.
Police stated that the driver had attempted to avoid a potential collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction when he lost control of the lorry, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into the culvert.
The driver was trapped inside the vehicle following the दुर्घادث, and officers of the Watawala Police made strenuous efforts to extricate him before rushing him to hospital.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident linked to the same scene, a passenger travelling on an Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya was seriously injured.
