According to the Department, total income reached Rs. 1.394 billion in 2025 — a 7% increase from 2024. The rise has been attributed to the growth of the tourism sector and the increased number of visitors to the country.
Officials noted that the revenue milestone was achieved despite the impact of Cyclone Ditva in 2025, which affected several parts of the country. The Department said the strong earnings highlight the significant contribution of botanical gardens to tourism revenue and related economic activities.
The botanical attractions managed by the Department include the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya; Hakgala Botanical Gardens; Gampaha Botanical Gardens; Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Gardens; Mirijjawila Dry Zone Botanical Gardens; and the Ganewatta Forest Herbal Garden.
Among them, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, attracted more than one million visitors last year. In total, more than two million visitors toured all botanical gardens under the Department in 2025.
The Department stated that the revenue includes income generated from entrance fees, plant sales, on-site facilities, and other related services.
