The statement was made during a discussion with the Steering Committee on the Modernization of the Curriculum of the National Academies of Education at the ‘Isurupaya’ Ministry of Education premises on 16 February 2026.
In line with the government’s education reforms aiming for all teachers to hold a degree, the Minister provided the Steering Committee with guidelines to modernize college curricula, upgrade diplomas to Bachelor of Education degrees, and assess student skills and course quality.
Dr. Amarasuriya noted that updating college curricula is the first step toward achieving the long-term goal of producing fully qualified graduate teachers. She also highlighted the importance of developing human resources, enhancing infrastructure, and creating balanced course schedules to minimize disruption to students.
The event was attended by Deputy Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne, Chief Commissioner of Teacher Education P.D. Iroshani K. Paranagama, and officials from the National Institute of Education and the National College of Education.
