The couple was gunned down in front of a supermarket in Thalangama at around 5.00 p.m. yesterday (13), police said.
According to investigators, the victims were seated in their jeep when a group of assailants arrived in a car, opened fire using a T-56 firearm, and discharged approximately 10 rounds before fleeing the scene. The couple died on the spot.
The deceased were identified as lawyer Malwarachchi and his wife, residents of Pitigala.
Police revealed that the lawyer had previously appeared in court proceedings involving a criminal known as Karandeniya Sudda. Police suspect that the killing may have been orchestrated by Karandeniya Sudda, allegedly through another criminal identified as Loku Patty.
