The suspects were arrested yesterday (12) by officers of the Special Investigation Unit of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, after a complaint was lodged by a resident of Gampaha. The complainant alleged that a business operating as EGA Visa Consultancy had collected Rs. 3.5 million by promising overseas employment but failed to provide the promised jobs.
Following the complaint, officers conducted a raid on the premises in Kandy, where it was revealed that the centre was operating without a valid licence issued by the Bureau, while falsely claiming to facilitate employment opportunities abroad.
Two 23-year-old suspects from Gampola and Thalathuoya were taken into custody. During the raid, authorities seized seven foreign employment contracts, five foreign passports, and cash receipt books, which are believed to have been used in the fraudulent operation.
The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court today (13).
Officials said the raid highlights the growing risk of unlicensed visa and job consultancies, urging the public to verify whether agencies are properly registered with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment before making any payments.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Kamal Ariyawansa, Director of the Central Crime Investigation Division, with the participation of Chief Inspector P. B. Ariyasinghe, Inspector T. B. De Alwis, Police Sergeant Marasinghe, and officers from the Bureau’s Kandy Provincial Office.
