Deputy Health Minister calls for strengthened medicine supply in hospitals

Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni has urged all hospitals to hold monthly drug review meetings to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of essential medicines.

The Deputy Minister made the remarks during an inspection visit to Matara District General Hospital, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to prevent drug shortages and ensure patient care is not disrupted.

“These review meetings are essential for identifying potential shortages in advance and implementing timely solutions,” Dr. Wijemuni said. He emphasized that hospitals should also explore regional procurement options when necessary to maintain continuous medicine supplies.

Dr. Wijemuni further noted that keeping adequate stocks of essential medicines at all times is key to resolving recurring drug shortage issues sustainably. He added that the Ministry of Health is actively working to streamline and strengthen the medicine distribution network through the Medical Supplies Division.

The initiative reflects the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare delivery and patient safety across the country.
