A foreign passenger was arrested by Sri Lanka Customs officers at the arrivals terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, on the morning of February 10 while attempting to smuggle a large consignment of foreign-made cigarettes.

Customs officials said the suspect, a 45-year-old engineer employed on a development project in Sri Lanka, arrived from Sharjah at 4.24 a.m. on Air Arabia flight G-9502.
During inspection, officers discovered 36,860 “Bahman” brand cigarettes, manufactured in Iran for domestic use, concealed inside two suitcases. The total value of the seized cigarettes is estimated at Rs. 55.29 million.
The suspect has been detained by airport customs officers, and further investigations are currently underway.
