Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, announced that Electronic National Identity Cards (e-NICs) are expected to be issued by April 2026. The move is part of a broader initiative, first launched in 2012, to digitize the national ID system.
Mr.Weeraratne emphasized the environmental impact of traditional plastic ID cards and underscored the importance of adopting a digital ID platform. The new system will utilize the Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), enabling a secure and efficient identity registration process tailored to Sri Lanka’s needs.
