The Department of Meteorology has forecasted showers or thundershowers in several regions of Sri Lanka today, especially after 1.00 p.m., with the possibility of fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm in certain areas.
The affected regions include the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, and Eastern provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa district. Meanwhile, a few other areas across the island may also experience showers or thundershowers during the afternoon or night.
Morning showers are expected in coastal areas of the Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Puttalam district.
Residents are strongly advised to take necessary precautions against localized strong winds and lightning, which may occur during thundershowers.
In addition, misty conditions are likely to affect parts of the Central and Uva provinces, and the Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning hours, potentially reducing visibility.
The Meteorology Department urges the public to remain updated with official forecasts and to act with caution during adverse weather conditions.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Hambantota, via Colombo and Galle.
Afternoon or night: Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island.
Wind Conditions
General Winds: South-westerly winds at speeds of 25–35 km/h.
Strong Winds: Wind speeds may increase up to 45–50 km/h at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Sea State
Fairly Rough Seas: Expected at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Moderate Seas: Predicted in other sea areas around the island.
Caution: Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
