Heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka has caused 24 major reservoirs to overflow, the Department of Irrigation confirmed today. This widespread overflow has been recorded in several key districts, including six reservoirs each in Ampara and Hambantota, four in Anuradhapura, and two each in Badulla, Kurunegala, Monaragala, and Trincomalee.
In addition to the major reservoirs, more than 16 medium-sized reservoirs have also begun releasing excess water to manage the surge in capacity.
The department further stated that over 91% of the total water storage capacity of both major and medium-sized reservoirs has now been reached, prompting close monitoring to mitigate potential flood risks.
Authorities are urging residents living downstream of reservoirs to remain alert and follow safety advisories issued by local disaster management units.
