The Malwathu Oya has seen a significant rise in water levels following heavy rainfall in its upper catchment areas, prompting concerns of potential flooding in nearby regions
The Irrigation Department has issued a warning, stating that minor flooding could occur in the lower floodplain areas, particularly in the Vengalacheddikulam, Madhu, Musalai, and Nanaddan district secretariat divisions.
In addition to the Malwathu Oya's rising levels, the department has also reported that 49 out of Sri Lanka's 73 major reservoirs have reached overflow levels due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
This significant water surge has heightened concerns about possible impacts on agriculture and infrastructure in the affected regions.
Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
