Sri Lankan photographer Hikkaduwa Liyanage Prasantha Vinod won the "Behaviour: Mammals" category at the 2024 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, held at London's Natural History Museum. His award-winning photograph, titled "A Tranquil Moment," features a young toque macaque peacefully sleeping in an adult's arms. The image draws attention to the challenges faced by the species due to habitat loss and conflicts with farmers.

The prestigious competition, celebrating its sixtieth anniversary, received a record-breaking 59,228 entries from 117 countries. This year’s winners capture the diversity and fragility of life on Earth, with other notable winners including Shane Gross, who was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his image of wriggling toad tadpoles.

Additionally, 17-year-old Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas from Germany won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year title for his captivating photo "Life Under Dead Wood," showcasing tiny springtails alongside slime moulds. His intricate image was created by focus-stacking 36 photographs, revealing a hidden world that plays a crucial role in soil health.
