Maldives, an immaculate Indian Ocean archipelago consisting of 26 atolls, is a top travel destination renowned for its breathtaking scenery, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs.
This paradise is famed for its luxurious overwater bungalows and unspoiled white-sand beaches, making it a perfect getaway for honeymooners, thrill-seekers, and those in search of peace. Tourism, essential for the Maldivian economy, features high-end resorts on private islands offering exclusive amenities. Activities such as snorkeling, diving, and various water sports allow visitors to explore the diverse marine life and coral formations. The islands’ culture, influenced by Indian, Sri Lankan, African, and Arabian traditions, provides a distinctive appeal. Additionally, efforts towards sustainable tourism help conserve this beautiful environment. The Maldives symbolizes tropical opulence and natural magnificence, attracting a global audience of travelers.

The latest data from the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism indicates China as the leading source of tourists as of May 6, 2024, with 87,566 visitors, followed by Russia, the UK, Italy, Germany, and India. The country celebrated a milestone of 500,000 tourist arrivals in 2024, led by China. By March 17, the Maldives had welcomed 513,377 visitors, with China contributing 60,699. Russia and the UK followed closely, adding to the robust start of the year with an average stay of 7.8 days per visitor.

The Maldives saw a significant increase in revenue in 2023 following hikes in the goods and services tax (GST) rates. However, the fiscal deficit is expected to hit 13.4% of GDP, with public debt escalating to 118.7% of GDP. The country’s current account deficit expanded notably to 22.8% of GDP due to increased import costs and a robust tourism sector. Real GDP growth is projected at 4.4% for 2023, with an anticipated rise to 5.2% in 2024, driven by expansions in airport facilities and hotel capacities.

Historically, over 200,000 Indians visited the Maldives each year in the three years preceding the pandemic, marking the highest number from any country. However, by January 28 of this year, only 13,989 Indian tourists had visited, with Russia leading at 18,561 visitors. Over 1.7 million tourists visited in 2023, with the majority being Indians, Russians, and Chinese.

The number of Indian tourists though significantly declined amid strained bilateral relations, prompting the Maldivian Tourism Minister to call for increased contributions from Indian visitors to support the tourism-dependent economy. Tourist arrivals from India dropped by 42% in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year. Despite this downturn, over 209,198 Indians visited the Maldives in 2023, with India initially leading but later falling to sixth place in the tourist market rankings.

March 2024 marked a historic achievement for the Maldives tourism industry, as the pristine island welcomed over 600,000 tourists by the end of the month. This record-setting figure underscores the continued appeal of the Maldives as a top travel destination and signifies a strong resurgence in global tourism. During March, daily tourist arrivals ranged between 6,000 and 8,000, culminating in a total of 194,227 for the month, the highest ever recorded. This surge highlights the Maldives’ enduring charm and its capacity to draw tourists even amid global uncertainties.

To enter the Maldives, travelers must possess a valid passport, an onward or return ticket, and proof of sufficient financial means. Upon arrival, a free 30-day visitor visa is granted, and travelers must complete a Traveler Health Declaration (THD) 96 hours prior to their trip, which can be submitted online.

For those transiting or traveling from certain countries, a yellow fever vaccination is required if the traveler is over nine months old, as designated by the World Health Organization.

The Maldives features a tropical climate with two main seasons—the dry season (northeast monsoon) from November to April and the rainy season (southwest monsoon) from May to October.

Noteworthy places to visit in the Maldives include Male City, Artificial Beach, National Museum, Addu Atoll, Maafushi Island, Grand Friday Mosque, Fulhadhoo Island, The Muraka at Conrad Maldives, Vaadhoo Island, and the Whale Submarine.

Male Velana International Airport, located on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll, is the primary gateway for international travelers coming into the Maldives and offers the only international flight connections within the country.
