Government approves Technology Promotion Act

The government has approved the Technology Promotion Act, effectively repealing the existing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act. The Legal Draftsmen have been tasked with preparing a draft bill based on an already developed concept paper.

Cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana addressed the media, explaining that the concept paper outlines the framework for introducing new laws aimed at fostering digital improvement and transformation.

Key proposals include the establishment of a Technology Innovation Council and a Digital Transformation Agency.

Minister Gunawardana emphasized the necessity of amending the ICT Act to facilitate the institutional reforms required for digital transformation.

The new Technology Promotion Act is expected to provide a more robust legal foundation for advancing the country's digital infrastructure and innovation capabilities.
