The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Coordination Committee and Member of Parliament, Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, during a discussion held on Tuesday (17) regarding shortcomings at the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) depot in Hatton.
Railway operations along the Up-country line were disrupted after adverse weather conditions associated with Cyclone Ditwah damaged sections of the track, affecting services between Nanu Oya and Badulla.
At present, train operations on the route remain restricted due to the disruption. However, restoration work has progressed, enabling authorities to plan the resumption of passenger services from Saturday.
The reopening of the railway section is expected to provide relief to commuters, tourists, and businesses that rely on the scenic Up-country rail corridor, one of Sri Lanka’s most popular transportation routes.
Railway authorities are expected to issue further details regarding train schedules and operational arrangements ahead of the resumption of services.
