The nationwide campaign will continue until tomorrow (June 10), with a comprehensive progress report scheduled to be released to the media today (June 9).
Speaking during a review meeting held at the Disaster Management Unit of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, stated that the inaugural day of the programme was highly successful.
The operation involved the coordinated efforts of the Tri-Forces, Police, government institutions, MOH offices, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, village committees, Public Health Inspectors, Medical Officers of Health, dengue assistants, and other healthcare personnel. Teams conducted extensive door-to-door inspections of residential and public premises to identify potential mosquito breeding sites.
Dr. Kannangara commended the dedication and commitment shown by all stakeholders involved in the programme.
According to the National Dengue Control Unit, more than 70,000 premises were inspected across the 72 MOH divisions on the first day alone. Numerous mosquito breeding sites and locations containing dengue larvae were identified in homes, schools, and government institutions. Legal action was also initiated against several institutions and premises where mosquito larvae were detected.
Dr. Kannangara further noted that a considerable number of breeding sites were discovered in abandoned properties and premises that had been closed or left unused by their owners.
He urged the public and all relevant stakeholders to continue extending their fullest cooperation during the remaining two days of the programme to ensure its success and help reduce the spread of dengue across the country.
