Priyantha Weerasuriya, Attorney-at-Law and Inspector General of Police, announced that authorities have launched several strategic initiatives to arrest organized criminals operating from overseas, signaling a strengthened nationwide crackdown on crime.

Speaking on recent developments, the IGP stated that a wave of criminal activities, including shootings reported in recent months, has now been largely brought under control. He confirmed that multiple suspects have been arrested and are currently facing legal proceedings.

Investigations have revealed that a significant number of these crimes were orchestrated from abroad. According to the police chief, 32 individuals linked to organized criminal networks have already been repatriated to Sri Lanka, including a key suspect who was returned to the country just last night.

Mr.Weerasuriya emphasized the role of strong international cooperation in these efforts. He noted that foreign law enforcement agencies have commended Sri Lanka’s legal framework and policing standards, enabling closer collaboration in tracking down suspects and facilitating extraditions. Authorities are also preparing to introduce additional measures to further strengthen these operations.

The IGP made these remarks during a visit to the Malwathu Maha Viharaya and Asgiri Maha Viharaya, where he sought blessings from the Mahanayake Theros in conjunction with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Officials indicate that ongoing investigations and international partnerships will continue to play a critical role in dismantling transnational criminal networks linked to Sri Lanka.
