Sri Lanka Police reported that at least 44 people lost their lives in 42 road accidents recorded across the island during the festive period from April 10 to April 15. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W.P.J. Senadheera, said that during the peak New Year days of April 13, 14, and 15 alone, 19 fatal accidents resulted in 19 deaths.

A breakdown of the vehicles involved reveals that motorcycles accounted for the highest number of fatalities, with 16 reported accidents. The statistics further include four vans, four three-wheelers, two motor cars, two cabs, two bicycles, and one reported hit-and-run incident. Authorities highlighted that motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable group on the road during high-traffic periods.

In a year-on-year comparison, DIG Senadheera pointed out a slight improvement in road safety figures. While the three-day New Year period in 2025 saw 25 accidents and 26 deaths, the numbers for the same period this year dropped to 19. Despite this decrease in fatalities, the overall death toll across the full six-day window remains a significant concern for law enforcement.

Investigations into the causes of these tragic incidents have identified driving under the influence of alcohol as the primary factor. DIG Senadheera emphasized that negligence and the violation of traffic laws, particularly drunk driving, continue to be the leading threats to road safety.
