Sri Lanka marked a significant milestone in its healthcare sector with the launch of the country’s first-ever national guidelines on the use of oxygen in government hospitals. The official unveiling took place today at the NH Collection Hotel in Kollupitiya.

Alongside the release of the guidelines, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media also initiated a nationwide training program focused on the proper use of oxygen in clinical settings. As part of this initiative, a group of 100 healthcare professionals, including specialist doctors, will receive advanced training.

These trained professionals will, in turn, conduct training programs at district and provincial levels for other healthcare workers serving in government hospitals.

The newly introduced guidelines consolidate all essential aspects of oxygen use in patient care. They are expected to enhance technical knowledge among healthcare professionals, including medical administrators responsible for organizing and managing oxygen-related services, as well as medical specialists overseeing patient treatment.

The initiative aims to strengthen the quality, safety, and efficiency of oxygen therapy across the country’s public healthcare system.

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Minister of health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, UNICEF’s Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Emma Brigham, and Health and Nutrition Manager Dr. Abner Daniel. Also present were senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, hospital directors, provincial and regional health service directors, representatives from medical institutions, and numerous specialist doctors and healthcare professionals.
