The Government has published a Gazette notification announcing a Bill to abolish the pension scheme for Members of Parliament.

The proposed legislation has been titled the “Parliamentary Pensions (Abolition) Act”, and it seeks to completely repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Act, No. 1 of 1977 enacted by the National State Assembly.

The Gazette notification has been issued under the directive of the Minister of Justice and National Integration.

The Bill further clarifies that any person who is entitled to or currently receiving a parliamentary pension under the provisions of the Parliamentary Pensions Act, No. 1 of 1977, the provisions of Section 9 of Act No. 1 of 1982, or the provisions of Section 9 of Act No. 47 of 1990, will cease to be eligible to receive such pension from the date on which the new Act comes into operation.

Accordingly, all parliamentary pension payments will be discontinued from the effective date of the proposed legislation.
