A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island this morning at around 10:26 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 16 miles (25 km) beneath the seabed. No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been issued by Indonesian authorities.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has advised residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant, although no tsunami warning has been issued at this time. The department stated that it is closely monitoring updates from international seismic centres and will provide further information as necessary.

Authorities urge the public to follow official announcements and avoid sharing unverified information.
