Speaking at a media briefing held at the Police Media Division auditorium in Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, ASP Wootler cautioned that such online behavior could inadvertently provide valuable information to criminals targeting travelers or their homes.
“We are entering a festive season when many families go on trips and pilgrimages. We have observed individuals posting photos and updates on Facebook or other platforms mentioning locations such as Nuwara Eliya, Galle, or Kataragama. This is unsafe, as criminals could use such information to track your movements or identify when your home is unoccupied,” he explained.
He further appealed to the public to exercise caution when arranging transport for such trips, particularly school excursions.
“The vehicle used for these journeys, especially those involving school children, must be chosen with care. Ensure the vehicle is in good mechanical condition, verify ownership details, and confirm the driver’s reliability and reputation to guarantee a safe journey,” he added.
Police have emphasized that these safety measures are especially vital during the upcoming festive period, when travel activity across the country tends to increase significantly.
